Creating your dream nursery is something most people only have the chance to do once or twice in their life. And, with your child’s infancy, this time doesn’t last forever, which is why this unique and finite time is so special! Make sure you cherish the time you have with your baby in their nursery before they grow into toddlers, and in the blink of an eye are off to college! With a beautiful nursery you will have beautiful memories of them as a baby to reflect on throughout their life; this magical time deserves a dream room to suit it. Here are five tips on how to have a perfect nursery!

1. Color

Pick a color scheme that is calming for you and your baby. Blue and white are classic nursery colors. Blue is calming like the sky and ocean while white is the perfect neutral to pair it with. You also can’t go wrong with any pastel color palette.

2. Toys

Cute little animals throughout baby’s room will inspire their imagination and little nursery furniture provides them with their own miniature space to play.

3. Rocking Chairs and Gliders

Babies love the feeling of rocking back and forth; having a rocking chair or glider in your nursery will make it easy for you to rock them to bed while comfortably seated.  Pro Tip –  Try out the seat before you buy it, you want to make sure you are comfortable sitting in it!

4. Personalize

Personalized items for your little ones is a great way to show your love! We have seen everything from letter decals above beds to, ‘We Love you Johnny’ painted into a mural! The possibilities are endless and truly transforms the nursery into the baby’s own space.

5. Attention to Detail

Little knobs and color pops here and there are the key to taking your nursery from pretty to perfect! It’s the little things that matter. If you have a more glam style, try luxury baby furniture in hot pink! A pop of color truly livens up the room and is a wonderful choice for a vibrant space.

Baby Boy’s Vintage Sports Nursery Design

I must admit I’ve been having way too much fun decorating baby boy’s nursery. We decided to do a vintage sports nursery theme since my husband was a huge athlete growing up and still had many old sports pieces from his old room that I wanted to incorporate into the overall design. I didn’t want the room to be overrun with the sports theme, but just wanted to add some key elements to give off the vintagy-sports look and feel. I’m so happy with the outcome and even happier that we are all ready to welcome Baby G in just a few short weeks!

I love the two glass french doors that open up into this little room in our house. We decided to add some privacy with some simple white faux-wooden blinds from Bed, Bath & Beyond to keep it neutral and light.

Rug // large wooden ruler // vintage cradle // gray glider // big block wall letter

I purchased the rug first because I knew I wanted to incorporate navy blue, and this rug from rugsusa.com had a sports-look and feel, so I thought it would fit nicely with the theme.

The cradle was handcrafted by my grandfather in 1983. I slept in it when I was a baby, my two sisters and two cousins slept in it when they were all newborns and my daughter used it a couple of years ago as her first cradle. Now, the tradition continues and baby boy will sleep in it when he arrives! We put a fresh coat of antique white chalkboard paint on it to keep the vintage feel.

The big “G” on the wall was inspired by my niece’s nursery – and we opted for a masculine navy blue color from Pottery Barn Kids.

I’m sort of obsessed with the wooden growth ruler from Lex’s Little Darlings on Etsy and can’t wait to start documenting the kids’ heights as they grow.

We already had the dark brown 8-drawer dresser from Ikea (which serves as the perfect height for a changing table), but I found some adorable wooden baseball knobs from ATG Stores online to add to the drawers and dress it up a little bit.

The “American Football” vintage throw-pillow and the big blue sports toy bag are from HomeGoods. We also had the gray glider from my daughter’s nursery, which we originally purchased from West Elm and works as an extremely comfortable and smooth rocking chair.

My husband had a few of his old home run baseballs saved from when he was growing up, so I took those and added some new baseballs from Big 5 to a metal basket I found at HomeGoods.

We received these adorable baby boy shoes (from Carter’s) from a friend at our baby shower, so I had to display these as well. :)

And I’m OBSESSED with this crazy green cactus that grows right outside the nursery window – the perfect backdrop for a little boy’s room!

The two little baby baseball player paintings above the glider are vintage from my husband’s nursery when he was a baby and the framed football player on the left is a signed photo of Troy Aikman that was also my husband’s when he was growing up (he’s a huge Cowboy’s fan). The white frame on the left has my daughter’s two feet prints from when she was born and we plan to replace the ultrasound photo of baby boy on the bottom with his own two feet when he graces us with his presence.

I also love the Aden and Anais organic cotton changing pad covers, so we added the starstruck design for baby boy.

vintage sports nursery design

More vintage fun from my husband’s old nursery including the two Cowboy’s football figurines, old Texaco piggy banks and airforce airplanes. My Father in Law also gave us baby boy’s very first Air Force football.

My sister made the awesome navy blue “G” mounted on a wood stump for our baby shower and I loved it so much I had to incorporate it into the room – so rustic and fun!

Overall, we were able to turn this small little room into a functional and cute baby boy’s vintage sports nursery. We can’t wait to welcome our new addition soon!

Nursery Design with Lavender’s Blue Store

If you read my blog regularly, you know I’m a huge supporter of women-owned businesses – especially “mompreneurs” (I like to refer to them as Fab Moms) because raising children and running a business is not for the faint of heart! I always love hearing about moms who are branching out on their own, following their passion and starting their own business. That’s why I was excited to connect with Olga and Maria – two stay-at-home moms who have just turned their passion for creating beautiful crafts into an adorable Etsy shop, Lavender’s Blue Store, based right here in Oceanside.

Lavender’s Blue Store

Lavender’s Blue specializes in handmade and hand-painted wooden letters – perfect for nursery or home decor. I love their etsy shop because each design is created specifically for you and your vision. You can choose your son or daughter’s name in block letters with his or her favorite colors or animals, or choose his initial with his name spelled out on the wooden letter.

Lavender’s Blue is also perfect for home decor, spelling out words like “home”, “love” or “joy” in a design of your choice.
home decor
Not to mention, the perfect gift for Father’s Day, which is quickly approaching!  You can spell, “Dad” in your husband’s favorite sport’s team’s colors or design – the possibilities are endless!
Father's Day Gift
With the excitement building around the arrival of our little man, I wanted to get two wooden letters – one for Blake and one for our little boy on the way, with both of their first name initials. I worked with Olga and Maria on the design and color scheme for each. Blake’s nursery is light pink and gray with butterflies. And while I’m still brainstorming the theme for our little boy’s room – I knew my husband would be happy with this design and it was a much better alternative to naming our son Tony Romo! 😉  (go Cowboys!)

I’m so happy with the way these both turned out and can’t wait to add them to their nursery designs. So cute!
Check out Lavender’s Blue Store on etsy and happy decorating!

The sleeves are perfect to slip on when your little one will be exposed to the sun, and then take off when it’s time to go back indoors.

First-hand Testimonial

Blake and I had the opportunity to test out some Sun Angels sleeves for ourselves and I was so happy with the outcome! Even though I’m constantly slathering her up with sunscreen, she still manages to get a farmers tan. The Sun Angels sleeves were easy to slip on before we headed outdoors to draw with some sidewalk chalk, and then slipped right off when it was time to go back inside. The best of all? Blake LOVES them! She thinks they’re a fun accessory and will even bring me the sleeves to put over her pajamas in the morning. Ha!
Bottom line – anything that keeps Blake’s skin protected from harmful sun rays gets an A+ in my book. See ya later farmer’s tan! :)

Everything You Need to Know About Essential Oils + Giveaway

I’m very excited to introduce you to my guest blogger today, Shelby Nowak. Shelby is a friend, a fellow mom and an expert on the hot topic of essential oils. I learned so much by reading her article and I hope you find it useful as well. Plus, enter to win some Essential Oils by entering the giveaway at the end of this post! Without further ado, here’s Shelby:

Hi! I’m Shelby.  Wife and mom to 2 beautiful little ones.  Life is hectic and crazy, but fun.  Our family is not the ultra-crunchy granola type.  But while I was pregnant and having problems with reflux, I found essential oils to offer amazing relief without having to resort to medications.  This led to our family using oils for all sorts of other problems.  Oils are a part of our everyday life now, and I love it!  I use frankincense for my skin, which helps with skin tone, aging and breakouts. I use lavender for my kids when they have minor injuries. I love the Thieve’s cleaner for our house, eliminating the need for toxic chemicals while still killing 99.6% of household germs.  Essential oils are great for families with children looking for clean alternatives to many products for children, and to help mamas with stress, sleep, and other concerns.  Interested but overwhelmed?  Here’s an introduction for you:

essential oils

Essential Oil Basics

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic compounds from plants.  A wide variety of different essential oils are available, and may be produced from seeds, bark, leaves, flowers, roots or peels of some fruits.  Essential oils are more than just pleasant smells though, and can provide many therapeutic benefits.

What kinds of things can you use essential oils for?

Anything really!  Oils can be beneficial to anyone, for a variety of physical and mental health complaints as well as for general wellness.  Some of the most common uses for oils include  helping with sleep, skin conditions such as acne and eczema, pain complaints, cold/flu symptoms, anxiety or depressed mood, promoting relaxing and relieving stress.

How do I use them?

Oils can be used topically, diffused into the air, and some oils can be ingested.  Oils can also be used for making personal care and cleaning products.  In general when used topically oils should be diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil or jojoba.  Use the same quality of oils that you can cook with and consume, as the oils are absorbed through your skin.  If diffused it is best to use an ultrasonic diffuser that does not use any heat as this can destroy many of the therapeutic properties of the oil.  Take particular care with ingestion of essential oils.  If you are not well versed in aromatherapy I suggest consulting with someone who is prior to ingestion of oils.  In particular be very careful about the brand you choose to ingest as oils are not regulated and many are contaminated with chemicals, pesticides or synthetics.

Safety precautions for oils?

In general oils should be diluted.  There are some exceptions to this rule.  Oils should generally not be used for babies less than 6 months of age, with the exception of a diffuser in the general area of an infant which is considered acceptable.  There are some exceptions to this as well, for example lavender and chamomile. Certain oils should be avoided with seizure disorder and during pregnancy. Please consult with someone comfortable with aromatherapy, or your medical provider or a naturopath for more details.

Great!  Where can I get oils?

Please be careful, do your research, and find a company that you can trust. Oils are not created equally!  There is a wide range of prices for essential oils, and this is because quality and purity vary greatly.  Unfortunately “100% pure” on a label does not necessarily mean the oil is really pure. Consider how the oils are distilled – steam distillation or cold-pressed are preferred.  Many of the cheaper brands obtain oils by solvent extraction, using chemicals to obtain the compounds. These types of oils should never be ingested and I wouldn’t recommend using them topically either.  My personal favorite and what I choose to use for my family is Young Living Essential Oils.

After extensive research I chose Young Living oils for the following reasons:

1. Young Living has a Seed To Seal Guarantee. They are the only company in the world that owns their own farms and distills many of their own oils.  They’ve been around for 20 years.  The farms are open to the public and you can see how they operate and even participate in harvest or distillation if you choose!  I love this transparency.  Every other company buys their product from third party growers usually in foreign countries where they give 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th distillations whereas Young Living only gives 1st distillations so their oils are much more potent and provide many more therapeutic benefits.

2. Oils from the health food store are aroma-grade oils and may smell good, but they do not offer the same therapeutic benefits because most of them contain less than 5% pure essential oil. YL oils are 100% pure with nothing ever added, or taken away.

3. Many essential oils have expiration dates, YL oils do not. Properly stored 100% pure essential oils (excluding citrus) won’t ever go bad and will last indefinitely. If an essential oil has an expiration date, it isn’t pure or has been cut with a carrier oil which will eventually go rancid.

4. Over 50 hospitals in the USA are now using YL oils, including the Cleveland Clinic.

5. YL carries 87 single oils and 70 blends (with more coming!) But, if an oil doesn’t pass YL’s strict quality standards they won’t offer it for sale so sometimes not all of these oils are available until they can get more.

6. Only 2% of essential oils sold in North America are suitable for medicinal/therapeutic purposes, and Young Living makes 98% of them!

7. Young Living oils meet all industry AFNOR and ISO standards and are subjected to isotopic ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) analysis which determines whether a particular essential oil is naturally sourced or synthetic (created in a lab).

8. I saved the BEST FOR LAST: Apothecary Society. This is a fabulous secret Facebook group for people who use, or are curious about using YL oils. Without the people in this group, I would be so completely lost with what to do with all of my little bottles of oils! Great information – tips and tricks, recipes/etc. Come join us!|

Checklist for Baby’s First Beach Day

Heading to the beach with Baby? Things have changed from the days of putting on your swim suit and flip-flops, grabbing a towel and a magazine and heading for the coast. Now, you have a tiny little human who requires much more thought into the  beach packing process. But don’t worry, I’ve done some extensive research on which items you’ll need to make your day full of fun under the sun the best one yet with your little bambino in tow! Here is the ultimate Checklist for Baby’s first beach day:

Baby's first beach day

  1. Sun Tent: preferably a large UV protected sun tent like the Pacific Play Tents Baby Suite I Deluxe Lil Nursery Tent With Pad to keep harmful rays away from your baby.
  2. Sun Hat: Choose a sun hat that has wide flaps, a chin strap and UV protection, like this Baby Girl’s Splashy Bucket Hat from Coolibar with UVF 50.
  3. Beach Blanket: A waterproof beach blanket like the JJ Cole Large Outdoor Blanket is perfect for a wet and sandy day at the beach.
  4. Sun Screen: If your baby is 6 months or older, check out this list from Lucie’s List of recommended sunblocks – gentle enough for baby, but strong enough to keep harmful UV rays off the skin.
  5. Sunscreen Bands: How cool are these Sunscreen Bands? You apply sunscreen to you skin and the band, and then it will change color when it’s time to reapply or to remind you that you’ve had too much sun for the day.
  6. Rash Guard/Bathing Suits: I think it goes without saying that your little one will need a cute little swim suit for the beach. I’d also recommend packing a couple juuuuust in case. I love the swim zip line because it’s a bathing sut and rash guard in one – and it’s adorable – like this baby girl’s sassy surfer look.
  7. Portable Crib: Think something light weight with mesh sides and easy setup, like phil&teds Traveller Crib (only 7 pounds) that fits nicely under a large tent and gives your little one the perfect place to take a break from the sand and get some shut eye or play time.
  8. Lightweight Blankets: Chances are you little bambino will tucker out while you’re still at the beach. Pack some light weight blankets like the Aiden and Anais Snuggle Bug organic dream blanket to keep them covered while napping.
  9. Portable High Chair: For longer stints at the beach, a portable high chair like this Ciao! Baby High Chair can come in handy to keep sand at bay while feeding your bambino.
  10. Snacks: If your babe has begun eating solid purees, I highly recommend packing these convenient and organic puree pouches from Plum. Easy to pack, easy to store (room temperature until opened) and BPA free packaging.
  11. Mini Blow-Up Pool: If your baby is too young to splash around in the actual ocean, consider bringing an easy-to-inflate mini blow up pool to keep your baby entertained and to double as a place to rinse sand off of baby. Choose something with a sun shade and UV protection like this Sunsmart Baby Hideaway.
  12. Diaper Backpack: Don’t make the same mistake I did and haul your every day, designer diaper bag to the beach – no matter how hard you try, you will get sand inside. And, as recommended from a mom in my playgroup, a Diaper Backpack allows you two free hands perfect for beach set-up – like this Eddie Bauer Broadmoor Diaper Bag.
  13. Wet/Dry Bag: Don’t forget to keep wet clothes/bathing suits away from clean/dry clothes in your beach bag, with a wet bag handy. And how cute is this Fairfax Navy Striped Wet/Dry bag from Pottery Barn Kids?

  14. Disposable Swim Diapers: I just recently found out that there was even such a thing! Try these Huggies Little Swimmers and soggy, wet diapers will be a thing of the past as your baby plays in the water!
  15. Baby Sunglasses: Not only will these make for adorable pictures, but they’ll also help protect baby’s eyes against UV rays. Check out my list of baby sunglasses I’m loving for summer 2014.
  16. Hooded Beach Towels: How cute is this personalized Cape Cod Whale Nursery Wrap from Pottery Barn Kids?
  17. Beach Toys: Something appropriate for water time fun, like this Lanco Natural Rubber Bath Time Ocean Set that is 100% natural rubber, PVC, BPA, and Phthalates Free (appropriate for 0+ months).
  18. Baby Powder: During my research for this list I came across several suggestions that recommended bringing baby powder that supposedly helps get rid of unwanted sand by rubbing a little onto the skin. The powder absorbs moisture, acting as a magic eraser for all stubborn sand. Try Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder. The 100% natural, talc-free powder is non-irritating and hypoallergenic.
  19. Sanitizing Wipes: I use these on the reg, but I’m sure they’re especially useful at the beach! I like these from CleanWell – alcohol-free, cruelty-free, and safe for sensitive skin.
  20. Comfy Outfit for Ride Home: It will be a good idea to change your little one out of the wet, sandy beach clothes and into a soft snuggly outfit for the drive home – something like this Button Footy in Pink Twinkle by Feather Baby – so soft!

What else woud you add to this list? I’d love to hear in the comments below.

We’ll see you on the beach! Surf’s up!

Top 5 Baby Sunglasses, Summer 2014

Living in sunny San Diego, sunglasses are easily my favorite accessory. I’ve been so excited shopping for baby sunglasses for little Miss Blake (she’s starting quite the collection with three pairs already!) And with the first day of summer quickly approaching (June 21st) and National Sunglasses Day not too far behind, (June 27th), I thought I’d share my Top 5 Picks for the most stylish baby sunglasses of summer, 2014:
baby sunglasses

  1. Soft Frame Cat’s Eye Baby Sunglasses from Carters: Soft rubber sides and the cutest animal print frames make these sunglasses the perfect fit for little fashionistas with some sass! (UVA and UVB sun protected.)
  2. Babiators: UVA and UVB protection that come in lots of different colors. I love how they say “Babiators” on the side – such a cute name!
  3. Retro Sunglasses from Gap: I mean, I seriously might die if I saw a little girl wearing these gold chrome retro sunglasses! So hip and so fun! (UV protection.)
  4. Betsy Johnson Cat Eye Sunglasses:These are for the princess of the house – with 100% UV protection and all the glam in the bright pink floral design, I pretty much need these for Blake.
  5. Jetsetter Aviator Sunglasses: Purple colored wire frames and mirrored lenses in an old school aviator design makes for a cool summer look for  your mini!

Baby Bloggy Bootcamp

This post is written by me on behalf of Liz Lange and Ergobaby.  Product was provided.

I originally found out about the Baby Bloggy Bootcamp in San Diego last month from the trusty Rookie Moms (I just love those two) who were also speakers at the event. After looking at the line-up and learning that we could bring our babies to the actual conference, I was eager to attend!

Baby Bloggy Bootcamp

The day was full of helpful information that pertained especially to new bloggers and mommy bloggers (which hit home for me in both categories). It was so much fun to be in a room filled with fellow women bloggers who were also mothers. Talk about a sense of camaraderie. I especially loved the tips from Tiffany Romero and Francesca Banducci (Founders of Sits Girls) about the key components that should be found on every blog – from SEO tips and tricks to best practices for sponsored content. I found it all extremely helpful.

baby bloggy bootcamp

The Swag

I’m all about swag, especially when it’s really, really good swag – like the products we all received at the Baby Bloggy Bootcamp.

ErgoBaby really spoiled us all with a new Ergobaby 4-position 360 Carrier, Ergobaby Swaddler and Ergobaby Wrap.

ergobaby

The new Ergobaby Four-Position 360 carrier is amazing. As you may have gathered from its name, it offers 4 different positions including a new, front-facing position. During the conference, Ergobaby demonstrated how to use this new product – which I found very helpful, even though it is extremely easy to use! I tried it out with Blake as soon as we got home and she fell right asleep in the comfortable carrier – snug as a bug in a rug! I can’t wait until she gets a little older so I can try the front-facing position.

Ergobaby 360 carrier

We also received a beautiful Liz Lange maternity dress. The fabric on this dress is so soft and very figure flattering for your baby bump. This is weird to say, but it made me want to be pregnant again! Having the baby bump is so much fun. And although I’m not currently pregnant, I know firsthand how hard it is to find luxury, stylish maternity pieces that are also affordable. I’ll definitely be putting this Liz Lange dress to good use during my next pregnancy and will happily check out the rest of their maternity clothing line, available at Target.

I also loved the samples of Honest Diapers, which I’ve been wanting to try on Blake for a while, and the cutest (and most delicious) candy I’ve had in a long time, from Sugarwish.

All in all it was a wonderful event and I hope to attend another Sway Group event in the near future.
