Personal Training in San Diego: I Bring the Gym

I Bring the Gym

Last week I started a workout program with the amazing Heidi, owner of I Bring the Gym. I was immediately drawn to Heidi’s fitness service in San Diego because quite literally, she brings the gym to you! That’s right, no more excuses, daycare issues or tardiness to classes – she just shows up at your door ready to work! Love that. Whether it be 1-on-1 personal training in the comfort of your own home or group training at your local park or beach, I Bring the Gym provides quality, customized workouts for you, at your convenience.

I know firsthand how difficult it is to commit to gym memberships and class schedules while trying to coordinate care for a little one with an ever-changing nap schedule! That’s why I was so excited to have Heidi come to my house and begin training me – Blake either naps while she’s here or plays and watches as Mommy does funny looking moves in the backyard.

I Bring the Gym offers affordable, in-home personal training or group training focusing on:

•Strength training
•Cardio
•Core conditioning
•Flexibility
I love Heidi’s training style and the way she focuses on your form for each workout. Sessions are usually a quick 45 minutes long and afterwards I feel like I truly received a great workout (my soreness level the next day also supports that theory!)

The 5 Best Mommy and Me Workout Classes in San Diego

Working out after having a baby is hard. And I’m not talking about physically hard, I’m talking hard in finding the time and energy to fit in a workout session. And just when you think the seas have parted and you can actually squeeze in a good workout, many moms (including me) don’t have nannies or daycare options to watch the little one(s) while breaking a sweat. That’s why I was so excited to find these different mommy and me workout classes in San Diego where your can bring your baby and also receive a great workout. Here are the 5 best Mommy and Me Workout Classes I’ve found in San Diego (specifically, North County):

  1. Stroller Jam at the YMCA, Encinitas:

The YMCA in Encinitas is pretty awesome! They offer so many classes, daycare for the little ones, a big indoor pool with a retractable ceiling to let the sunshine in, and the thing that attracted me the most – their Stroller Jam classes. Stroller Jam incorporates a workout with your strollers and your babes in tow. They usually conduct these classes along the coast in Encinitas, so moms can enjoy fresh ocean breezes during this challenging workout. Really challenging. I might have had to lay down on the sidewalk to catch my breath while my baby secretly judged me from her stroller (ok, yes, that happened). Now, THAT’S what I call a good workout.

  2. Barre Class at the Dailey Method Barre Studio, Carlsbad:

I attended  this fun Mommy and Me class with my mommy group (read about the whole experience here). Who knew that half-inch movements could provide such an intense workout! Of course there’s much more to the class, including a combination of ballet barre work, core conditioning, muscular strengthening, yoga and orthopedic exercises – all while wearing your baby in a carrier! It’s a win-win; baby gets to be close to mama while mama gets in a great workout with added weight!

  3. Mommy Bootcamp with California Core

If you’re like me and love circuit training and exercising outdoors, this one’s for you! California Core is set to open this coming Winter in North County, San Diego. I had the pleasure of experiencing a demo class which was an hour session mixed with cardio and strength training. California Core is all about  functional fitness training designed for the San Diego lifestyle. I loved this class because it focuses on building your core through personalized training at private residences, local beaches and parks. Their mobile fitness comes to you and babies in strollers are welcome to join! Your first class is always free and mention you heard about California Core through Mommy Project SD & get your second session 10% off!

  4. Mommy KCal Class at Baja Body Athletic Club, Oceanside:

Baja Athletic Club is a new gym in Oceanside. The thing that makes them unique is their sand studio where they teach different core classes, an Anti-gravity class and more fun, unique workouts. After trying (and loving) their Anti-gravity class, I signed up for the Mommy KCal Class where you burn 1,000 calories! (It was insane). During this high energy cross training program, they mix strength and cardio integrating suspension cables, jump ropes, overhead monkey bars and more! This is a very fun, high energy class for moms to enjoy while babies are having supervised fun playing in the sand room!

  5. Mommy & Me Yoga Class at Soul of Yoga, Encinitas:

This was one of the first Mommy and Me classes I took after Blake was born (read all about my first experience here). I love these classes because not only do you get some amazing stretching time while your baby looks up at you from your yoga mat in awe of the different poses, a portion of the class also incorporates baby yoga where you move your baby’s legs and arms to stimulate circulation and digestive. Fun for mom and baby! Namaste.

Baby Outing: The Dailey Method Barre Studio

As I’ve discussed before on this blog, I’m trying to get back in shape and “tone it up” after having my daughter 4 months ago! It is proving to be a little more difficult than I had imagined, mainly due to the lack of time that I can allocate to working out. That’s why I was extremely excited to hear about the new Baby Class at The Dailey Method Barre Studio  in Carlsbad.

What is The Dailey Method Barre?

Pre-baby, and even pre-pregnancy, I had always been very curious about Barre classes. I learned that the Dailey Method is a unique combination of ballet barre work, core conditioning, muscular strengthening, yoga and orthopedic exercises (yep, yep and yep – I’d like all of this, please!) This form of exercise is safe for all levels of fitness, even pregnant women. And they play really fun music.

Baby Class

The new baby class incorporates your baby into the workouts allowing them to be the added challenge of working through thigh work with the babe as your resistance. During the workout, your baby is in her carrier with you through every motion – or on a mat staring up at you as you complete the exercises.

Let me tell you – this class was HARD. I was sweating bullets and had to take little breaks here and there. And the next several days after the class my legs were like jello jigglers – so sore! I hadn’t completed that intense of a workout since before I was pregnant. I was hooked. Finally, a more intense workout that also incorporated the babies. I’m looking forward to making these classes a part of my weekly schedule. The Dailey Method Barre Studio in Carlsbad also offers childcare right there in the studio if you decide to sign-up for regular classes (sans baby) – so convenient for us busy moms!

Spring has Sprung: 5 New Goals

Happy first day of spring! There’s something about the first day of spring that just screams new beginnings. The flowers blooming, the birds chirping, Tucker chasing the birds that are chirping…

I always like to set little goals for myself right around this time, because, let’s be honest, my New Year’s resolutions don’t always stick at first (I think everyone needs a good couple of months after the holidays to recover and regroup).

So, in no particular order, here is my list of 5 goals for Spring 2014:

1. Exercise More: I know,I know, SO predictable. But after my Fit, Fab Feb, I pretty much fell off the wagon. With this warm weather upon us, thinking about getting back into a bikini after having a baby is probably the scariest thing I’ve faced since a man with a chain saw chased me at a haunted house two Halloween’s ago (and that was TERR-I-FY-ING)! That being said, I MUST find the time to workout. And “finding the time” has come to mean, incorporating Blake into my workouts. Here are some great links featuring workouts that incorporate your baby. Blake and I tried a few of these and Blake laughed the whole time – so much fun!

2. Entertain in our Backyard: Pre-baby I use to love to entertain at our house. Strike that, pre-pregnancy! I tried to entertain a few times while I was prego and the whole, being too tired to enjoy the party and not being able to indulge in an adult-beverage with my guests, really just put a kibosh on the whole thing. But, now that Blake is a little older and not crying every hour, I can’t wait to host some fun spring and summer parties in our backyard! After finding this awesome lantern at HomeGoods and digging out this cool book from the closet, I’m ready to start planning some par-ties!

Get your party pants on and follow my Outdoor Entertaining Pinterest Board for inspiration!

3. Plan Summer Vacations: Some of the best memories from my childhood were while we were on vacation. I can’t wait to take Blake on so many fun adventures, exploring new cities and countries. I want her to know how to get dirty while roughing it camping but also how to dress up for afternoon tea in Paris. (Check out more of my hopes for her, written before she was even born). I just can’t wait to show her the world!  This summer we’ll be taking her to Lake Tahoe, Colorado and the Outer Banks to start. So much planning, so little time!

4. Launch my Business: It’s official – I won’t be returning to Hyatt after my maternity leave. After living and breathing that job for 4 years, it’s time for me to take the next step professionally and launch my own marketing consulting business. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, but finally life seems to be just where it should be in order to take this next step. It will also allow me a flexible schedule to be a full-time “Mommy” to Miss Blake. So, with one client strong, I’m launching KH Marketing in the next couple of weeks. Maybe I’ll even throw a Launch Party to also help with my goal #2?

5. Teach Blake How to Walk: Juuust kidding – the child is not even 4 months old! But, I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next. Her belly laughing and now, rolling over are so adorable I just don’t know how she’s going to top those. (Somehow, I know she will). :)

#FitFabFeb Workout #5 – Circuit Training at Home

Well, my friends, we are on the last stretch of #FitFabFeb! I’m happy to report that I have lost 3 pounds this month and feel stronger and more energized than I did in January (this might also have to do with the fact that Blake is now sleeping 6 hours straight – maybe it’s a combination of the two). My husband even said to me the other day, “Look at your 6 pack!” – HA! I laughed because I knew he was just humoring me, but I do know it’s under there, somewhere, and I will find it…someday. 😉

Let’s end the month strong with this workout to add into your weekly routines:

Circuit Training at home

And just because February is over and #MarchFitFab doesn’t sound as catchy, this doesn’t mean that we have to lose our momentum! I plan to keep on this fitness track and will continue to post occasional motivations here and there on this blog.

In case you missed them, here are all 5 circuit training workouts from our #FitFabFeb. As always, happy sweating (and cursing and wincing and whining…)

#FitFabFeb Workout #4 – Circuit Training at Home

Wowza, I have been lagging with posting more #FitFabFeb workouts. Sorry, I’ve been eating instead (sigh). BUT, I’m back on track this week and ready to finish the month off strong – let’s do this!

Here’s a new workout to mix into your routines:

#FitFabFeb Workout #3 – Circuit Training at Home

TGIF! I’m so happy to hear that many of you are following along with #FitFabFeb and completing these circuits at home! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been quite soar after each one. Finding the motivation to work out at home every day is definitely hard, but after each workout I always feel like a million bucks (and Blake loves watching me jump around like a crazy person – pure entertainment for her).

Must.Keep.Going!

Here’s the 3rd circuit to start intermixing into your weekly routines:

Have a great weekend!

#FitFabFeb – Week 2 of Circuit Training at Home

Continuing with my #FitFabFeb month dedicated to getting back in shape and toning it up for summer, it’s time for a new circuit workout routine!

I received my 2014 Victoria’s Secret Swim catalog in the mail yesterday and had a minor freak out when I realized swimsuit season is just around the corner!

Workout inspiration

Is it just me or was this catalog sent out early this year? Either way, it gave me the motivation I needed to complete this next circuit of exercises and I am FEELIN’ THE BURN, BABY (in a good way). Good luck!

Fit and Fab February

It’s hard to believe that February is just a few days away! I’m personally declaring this month Fit and Fab February because, (a.) I love alliteration and (b.) I need to kick my butt into gear and start working out to get back to my pre-pregnancy shape. I’m very thankful that breastfeeding has helped me speedily shed the pounds, but now it’s time to TONE IT UP, sister! (Not to be confused with “turn it up”…shudder). I must admit it’s quite hard to muster up enough energy to exercise after pregnancy, especially when you’re sleep deprived! But in these desperate times, I always look to Britney Spears for motivation:

Exercise after pregnancy

Because I don’t have a nanny to watch the babe while I go spend time at an actual gym, this workout plan is going to have to happen in my own home. So, with that, I took to Pinterest and found numerous circuits that I can easily do in the comfort of my own home (and with baby girl watching me like I’ve lost my mind from her monkey bouncer).

I’ve made myself a calendar of workouts because, (a.) I come from the corporate world where if it’s not on my calendar then it doesn’t exist and (b.) to help further motivate and keep me on track. I’ll be posting my circuits on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with hashtag: #FitFabFeb if you’d like to follow along.

Here’s the first Circuit of the month to kick it off on February 1st:

Postpartum workout

And here’s the recommended song to play with this circuit: Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive featuring Kendrick Lamar (still obsessing over this performance from the Grammy’s).

Happy sweating! :)
