Rookie Mom Challenge #8: Go Out for Just Dessert

Mother Daughter Outing for Dessert

This is the 31st challenge in the list of 52 weekly Rookie Moms Challenges, but I had to skip ahead because – let’s be honest – I was craving a cupcake.

Blake and I had just finished a great workout at The Dailey Method Barre Studio (their baby classes are such a good workout for mom and so entertaining for Blake) and instead of heading straight home and making myself a healthy smoothie – like the angel on my shoulder told me to – I listened to the little devil instead and pulled straight into Elizabethan Desserts.

Elizabethan Desserts is the cutest little dessert parlor in Encinitas.  When you walk through the doors you feel like you just entered into a beautiful doll house – it’s decorated in bright turquoise and crisp white with pops of yellow flowers on each table. I could have sat in that shop all day – sipping tea and eating cupcakes.

I was so excited to show Blake the bright colors and the fun cupcakes displayed in the window, but when I went to take her out of her car seat, I realized the little darlin’ was fast asleep (guess she really did get a good workout in at our barre class). At least I got to take this cute picture of her in the over-sized turquoise chair.

Baby Outing

I ordered the coconut cream cupcake for myself and a mini red velvet cupcake for Blake. Don’t worry, I ate hers for her (the things we must do for our children). They were absolutely incredible

All in all a very sweet mother daughter outing. And I can’t wait to make this a cute little tradition for Blake and I – mommy/daughter dessert dates at Elizabethan Desserts – sitting in the big turquoise chairs, sharing cupcakes and enjoying the make-believe ambiance. Perfect.

Rookie Moms Challenge #5: Practice Yoga Baby Style

This past week Blake and I completed the 7th Rookie Mom’s Challenge: Practice Yoga Baby Style. This was easily my favorite Rookie Moms Challenge to date. I had taken a few prenatal yoga classes at Soul of Yoga in Encinitas while I was prego and I always wanted to come back with the babe to try out the “Mommy and Me” Yoga class. That’s why I was excited to see this challenge on the Rookie Moms list of 52 Weekly Challenges.

On the way to the class, we did start off a little rocky with Blake’s crying protest – Oh, the NERVE of me putting her in her car seat! It crossed my mind to turn around and try this class again the following week, but I figured she was dressed (in her most fitting baby yoga attire nonetheless), fed and changed so there was no stopping us now! The Yoga gods must have shone down on us because the second we walked into that studio she stopped crying. Namaste!

Nursing and Crying and Blowouts, oh my!

The class was full of babies all around Blake’s age. I had even invited some of my mommy play group members to come along and experience the fun (and they did)! You could see the slight fear on all of us baby-yoga-first-timers’ faces – what if our baby started crying during class? What if she needed to eat or be changed? All of these worries were immediately put to ease when the instructor began the class with, “Anything goes here – feel free to breastfeed, change diapers, and do whatever it is you need to do to make this enjoyable for you and your baby.” (I could almost hear the sigh of relief from some of the moms, me included – this was a safe zone)! And boy did we all take her up on that: Poop blowouts, crying babies and breastfeeding were going on all around us at all times. As soon as one baby was content, another one would need to be fed, or changed or rocked – it was glorious!

“Don’t Act Like You’re Not Impressed”

Of course Blake needed a diaper change about half way through, which wasn’t worrisome to me anymore, because, as we all had heard – this was perfectly acceptable right dab in the middle of class! What WAS worrisome, was when I realized that I was down to my last diaper in my bag – a.k.a. my “backup” diaper because it was one from my baby shower game where everyone writes funny sayings on the diapers. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about – check it out here). I laughed to myself because what are the chances that we’d be caught in a “spotlight” change situation (in the middle of a circle with everyone staring) where I have to whip out the diaper that says (in huge sharpie ink), “Don’t Act Like You’re Not Impressed” (Anchorman…anyone?). I paused for a moment, hoped that the other mothers played the same game at their showers and proceeded with the change.

Baby Yoga

The instructor came around the room and banged her little gong in front of each baby’s face, asking each one if they were ready for yoga. Blake’s eyes have never been wider when she saw and heard the gong – oh yea, she was ready! :) The first part of the class was all about “baby yoga” stretching their little arms and legs, singing yoga songs (to the tune of common nursery rhymes) and then giving them soothing massages. It was probably the cutest thing I have EVER seen – and Blake was loving it.

The second part was all about mom – practicing the typical beginner yoga poses while our babies looked up at us from the mats (Blake thought it was hilarious when I did poses dangling over her – funny mommy).

Soul of Yoga

The last part of the class incorporated the babies and moms – swinging the babies around, practicing different poses while holding the babies, etc. This is about when Blake reached her yoga limit and started wailing – just in time for the…breath in, breath out…Namaste! We made it! :)

Rookie Mom Challenge #4: Enjoy Modern Art with your Bambino

Blake and I are now on our 4th week of Rookie Moms challenges and we are loving every second! This past week we decided to complete the challenge: Enjoy Modern Art with your Bambino (Activity #12 on the Rookie Moms list).

February just happens to be Museum Month in beautiful San Diego, so I decided to take full advantage of half-off admission and head to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla. Having lived in San Diego for 12 years, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I had never visited this museum before this trip. Oh well – a first for me and Blake alike!

The ‘Fit…

Blake insisted on wearing one of her “fancy” outfits to the museum, so I wasn’t going to stand in her way. We tried to pull off her adorabe pink sparkly shoes, but the little lefty wouldn’t stay on her “busy” feet – socks it was!

Is This Real Life?

If there’s one thing that I can always count on with Blake when we’re out and about – it’s that she’ll only sleep when it’s noisy! Mike and I took her to an (unexpectedly) loud Mexican restaurant last week (stay tuned for the write up in my upcoming Whine and Dine series), complete with a mariachi band performance, and the Little Miss stayed asleep the entire time – didn’t even flinch when the trumpet started playing! Now, I bring her, fast asleep, into the quietest most serene museum atmosphere ever and her eyes popped wide open and frowned as if the quiet ambiance was annoying her. Luckily, I had our trusty Mr. Wubbanub handy to keep her entertained while we perused around.

All of the paintings and photography pieces were gorgeous, but my favorite part of the museum was a sitting room with huge windows that faced La Jolla Cove. The photo below almost looks like a painting behind Blake, but it’s not – it’s REAL LIFE! :)

Catch us if you can…

Now, I’m still not really sure if I was allowed to take any photos inside of the museum. I didn’t see any signs warning me not to, but I think I’m scarred for life from my trip to Italy last year when I was scolded for taking photos inside of the Chanel Museum. The Museum Rep. actually stood over my shoulder and watched, glaring, to make sure I erased each one. How do you say “woopsies” in Italian?!

Just to be safe on this museum trip, I always stayed one step ahead of the security guard (who I believed to be hot on my trail) so I could take some of the shots you’ll see below. Blake was in and out of sleep the entire trip – drifting off when there was any sort of noise and then wide awake when all was silent.

#ParentoftheYear…

After we successfully made it through the exhibits with no baby crying and no mommy getting scolded (yay!), we headed down to La Jolla Cove to take in the beautiful, sunny day. While taking this next shot, I was so concerned about getting the right angle that I didn’t even notice poor Blake’s little face directly in the sun. Just a quick dose of Vitamin D, sweetheart! #parentoftheyear

Mommy Project San Diego

All in all a very successful trip to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and another Rookie Moms Challenge checked off our list!

If you’re in the San Diego area during the month of February and want to visit any of the wonderful museums in town at half-off regular admission – check out the list of participating museums here and visit Macy’s to obtain tickets.

Rookie Mom Challenge #3: Visit Your Spouse at Work

Now on our 3rd week of Rookie Mom Challenges (we’re kinda on a roll), Blake and I decided to skip around on the list a little bit and complete the challenge: Visiting Your Spouse at Work.  It just so happened to be my husband’s 30th birthday last week so what better time to visit him at work and take him out to lunch!

Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho – It’s off to work we go…

Mike’s office is a good 30 minute drive from our house, so this was one of the longest car rides Blake has experienced to date (besides her first ride home from the hospital when Daddy was driving 5 MPH on I-5). Blake normally has a love-hate relationship with her car seat. She HATES it at first (she waves her little fists and thinks, “how dare this contraption lock me into this position!”) and then after about 5 minutes she either becomes so disgruntled or so comfortable (I can’t really tell which yet) that she falls fast asleep. I also realized that her Wubbanub (the best and only pacifier she will take  – and it looks adorable in her mouth) has also helped to make car rides a lot more enjoyable for the both of us – this trip was no exception!

Daddy!

When we reached Daddy’s office, we were about to go inside when Blake decided that she hated her car seat again and began to fuss (waving her little fists in protest again). Me, not wanting to bring a screaming baby into a corporate office building filled with important clients, decided to just pick Mike up in the front of his building and head to lunch. The look on Blake’s face when she saw her Dad was so cute! She looked shocked at first (it’s not even 6PM yet – what are you doing here?) then showed a big smile. She’s a Daddy’s girl for sure!

SDPD at it’s Finest

We had lunch at a place called Croutons in La Jolla. They have the best salads, mostly due to their…wait for it…croutons! (Bet you didn’t see that coming did you?) When we first arrived, there were no seats available. As we stood in line to order our lunches a police officer came up to me, “Excuse me Miss?” I was a little scared at first – did I park illegally? Was Blake not installed correctly in her car seat? Did I look so disheveled that he thought I had been drinking? To my great surprise the nice police officer offered us his table which made me really appreciate our SDPD – a class act for sure!  After we were situated at the table, the buzz of the busy restaurant put Blake right to sleep so Mike and I could enjoy our lunches, including this delicious Buffalo Chicken Salad:

Awkward Family Photo Opp

After lunch we dropped Mike off at work, but not before taking an awkward family “selfie” in the reflection of his office building window. I can only imagine the poor chap on the other side of that window wondering, what on EARTH is going on right now? Don’t worry sir (or madame) it’s just a Rookie Mom completing her Rookie Mom challenge in corporate America. Cheese! :)
