Fab Mom: Katharine Coggeshall of Fitness Translator

I’m excited to introduce you to a new “Fab Mom” in my Fab Mom Series, Katharine Coggeshall of Fitness Translator. Katharine recently switched careers from being a full-time scientist to becoming an in-home personal trainer, specializing in women’s weight loss. The career switch enables her to spend more time with her three children, while giving something back to the community — her knowledge of science-based healthy weight loss, especially for moms trying to lose weight after baby is born!

You can follow Katharine on Facebook and Twitter, or learn more about what she has to offer on her website here.

Here’s Katharine:

Who calls you mom and how old are they?

I have 3 little ones: Emma (7 yrs), Michael (5 yrs), and Adeline (3 yrs).

What do you do?

I’m an in-home personal trainer, specializing in women’s weight loss, and I have a health and wellness blog—FitnessTranslator.com. But when my kids get out of school in the afternoon, I’m home with them. They get my full attention.

What does a typical day look like for you?

All 3 littles are dropped off at school and I prioritize my day: my own exercise routine, in-home training sessions, blogging, household chores, and lots of reading. When the kids are done with school, I pick them all up and we do our afterschool activities, head home to prep dinner, spend the evening with daddy, and put them all to bed.

Any advice on how to “juggle it all”?

Organize! I make lists of all the lists I need to make. Every Sunday I plan the meals for the week and make a grocery list to coincide with it. I write down all of the activities and action items needed for the kids that week, and a separate list of my own action items. I keep a pad of paper and a pen in my purse at all times, because if it doesn’t get written down it is probably not going to happen!

When was the first time you really felt like a mother?

When I breastfed my first baby. It’s a powerful thing. I can remember every detail of it still.

What’s the hardest thing about being a mom?

Having mommy guilt—that feeling like I’m supposed to be conquering the world mixed with that feeling of I’m supposed to be taking care of my babies. You never feel 100% comfortable with where you are at that moment because you can never be in 2 places at once.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being a mom?

When I see one of my children being kind to another child. I feel like all of my caring, patience, disciplining, time, and energy was worth it. Like I helped to add something positive to this world.

What’s the funniest/most shocking thing that has happened to you since you’ve become a mom?

I was recently prepping my assembly line of lunches in the morning, and my youngest (Adeline) asked me to make her some pancakes (“fancakes” as she likes to call them). I told her I was too busy, so she decided to quietly help me out by making them herself. She knew all of the ingredients and poured them all on the floor: flour everywhere, smashed eggs, oil, and even some cinnamon! She was so proud of herself, I didn’t know what to say!

I wrote a post about “mental snapshots” that I’ll always remember, even without a photo. I know it’s hard to choose one, but what is your favorite moment, or “mental snapshot”, with your little ones so far?

This past summer I took all of my kids back to my home town in New Mexico to visit my family and their cousins. My mental snapshot is of my littles with all of their cousins, playing in the desert just like I used to do growing up. It was really special.

What has been your best baby product purchase so far and why? What age is it appropriate for?

A Moby wrap. It’s appropriate for newborn-toddler. My second baby practically lived in it while I was chasing my oldest around, who was a toddler at the time. Babies find it so soothing and moms can actually have their hands free.

What’s something new you have learned about yourself after becoming a mother?

I never realized how patient I could be. In fact, I don’t think I was until I had children. But there is no limit to what a mother will do for her child, even learn to be patient!

What do you do to unwind/relax when you have some rare time to yourself?

Apart from exercising, I love to get a massage and take a really hot bath. It’s even better when your muscles are really sore.

What is your favorite outing, to date, with your little ones?

I love the San Diego Zoo. It’s a really nice combination of nature, walking, attractions, and excitement. My kids are never bored there and they always sleep really well afterward!

I have a running list of Whine & Dine Restaurants that are family-friendly in San Diego. What’s your favorite restaurant that you frequent with your family and in what city? Why do you dine out there?

We love the Panera in Carmel Mountain Ranch because it has a covered outdoor area that is absolutely perfect for noisy kids! It’s even shady.

Pretend your best friend is pregnant and about to have a baby. What’s the most important piece of advice you would share about “motherhood”?

Never forget to mother yourself. She won’t need much advice about mothering her child, we do it pretty naturally, but we moms never understand the importance of nurturing ourselves. Your child benefits from it as well.

I love their art style and how they’ll customize classes for adults, kids and private parties.

Mom’s Night Out in San Diego with Aall In Limo & Party Bus

With a fun holiday like Cinco de Mayo upon us, and Mother’s Day just around the corner, I couldn’t think of a better time to organize a little “Mom’s Night Out” on the town to give me and my mom friends a much needed break and some quality girl time. Cinco de Mayo also happens to be one of my favorite holidays because who doesn’t have fun with chips and salsa, margaritas, and maracas in the mix? Spoiler alert: no one.

mom's night out in San Diego

To make this Mom’s Night Out extra special, we decided to rent a limo from Aall In Limo & Party Bus and head down to Old Town to celebrate our night of freedom, complete with mini sombreros!

Aall In Limo & Party Bus

Aall In Limo & Party Bus was started by Mike Reifeiss, after he went “Aall in” during  a poker tournament and won! He bought his first limo with his winnings and has continued to grow his business in San Diego and Temecula ever since. Aall In Limo & Party Bus offers town cars, stretch limos, Hummers and a Party Bus as part of its fleet. They specialize in Temecula winery tours, San Diego brewery tours, bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthday parties or a night out just because!

The thing that truly sets Aall in Limo & Party Bus apart from other limo transportation options in San Diego, is their service. I’ve personally experienced a few other local limo companies and nothing compared to the attention to detail, courtesy and overall service that Aall in Limo provided our group. I also thought the name was just so fitting after I wrote my “All in” Mother’s Day article! It was meant to be.

Mom’s Night Out in San Diego

With good intentions to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with some Mexican food and margaritas, the seven of us headed to Old Town, San Diego. Tragically there were huge lines out the door  of almost every Mexican restaurant, so we made a game-time decision to head to Little Italy’s Kettner Exchange instead (afterall, there were some hungry pregnant women in the limo who needed to eat A.S.A.P.! 😉 ) Our limo driver, Joe, was so accomodating with the change of plans and got us safely to our new destination.

mom's night out in San Diego

Kettner Exchange provided the perfect atmosphere for a girls night out. Even with no reservation, the seven of us were able to claim a long community table in their lounge and instantly found ourselves with cocktails, mocktails and appetizers circulating.

mom's night out in San Diego

Although we tried many delicious tapas, I highly recommend the Fried Chicken (I’ll seriously dream of this dish), Kale Salad, and Cauliflower Tempura.  For my main course I had to order the Double Double Burger, because…well, have  you seen this thing? Yes, please.

mom's night out in San Diego

Our driver, Joe, politely texted me when we were getting close to our departure time (I LOVED the courtesy text – so helpful), so with that we paid the bill and headed back to north county.

Despite the change of dinner plans, the night ended up being a huge success and a much-deserved night out for these mamas!

Thank you Aall In Limo & Party Bus for perfecting our “Cinco de Mayo / Pre-Mother’s Day Mom’s Night Out” – no doubt we will be using your services again!

Book Aall In Limo & Party Bus for Mother’s Day this Sunday and receive $100 off your reservation! Find out more here.

Disclaimer: Aall In Limo & Party Bus provided complimentary transportation for the Mommy Project, San Diego. However, all opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Monday Mashup…on Wednesday

This week’s Monday Mashup is coming to you on Wednesday because I was on vacation this past Memorial Day weekend so I’m a couple of days behind! Hope you’re all having a wonderful hump day! In no particular order, here’s what I’m loving this week:

  1. Growing Child: My fabulous, fellow mommy friend who blogs over at Little Better Halves alerted me to this cool service for parents. Growing Child is a monthly newsletter that follows your child as he/she grows and helps you understand what he/she is learning and how you can help him/her develop. It also gives great tips about how to deal with each month’s changes and challenges as your babe grows. Can’t wait to check this out!
  2. Little Mizz Kit: I had the pleasure of meeting the Founder of Little Mizz Kit last week and as she was describing her business, I immediately fell in love with the product. Little Mizz Kit is a monthly hands on activity kit for parents and their daughters aimed to provide bonding opportunities and building confidence in young girls. How cool is that? I received the first welcome kit and I can’t wait to complete the  different activities with Blake – focused around arts & crafts, fitness, nutrition, life lessons and how-to instructions. I also love this company because a portion of their proceeds go to March of Dimes.
    little mizz kit
  3. Samsung S5: I did it – I jumped ship from the iPhone (gassssp). But before you judge, check out the new Samsung S5 – its camera is phenomenal, photos and data are stored on your Google account so you don’t run out of memory and, drum roll please, it’s waterproof. So far I’m loving this new phone! #Expectmore
    samsung_galaxy_s5
  4. Family Sleep Event: Don’t miss JenniJune’s workshop as she discusses tactics to help your little one take longer naps and sleep through the night. Guests will also receive amazing swag bags and the opportunity to shop some of the best baby gear on the market. The tour kicks off in San Diego and Del Mar this coming weekend and then heads across the US! Receive $5 off your ticket when you register with code: MOMMYPROJECT.
  5. Just Four Paws, Inc.: San Diego readers, if you’re looking for great pet sitting services including daily walks, overnight sitters or a pet taxi service, Just Four Paws is fantastic! While we were out-of-town this past weekend, we used Just Four Paws, Inc. to watch Tucker and I was extremely impressed with their services. They texted me with a photo of Tuck every day and every night and we came  home to a detailed note from the sitter along with a happy pup! I’m excited to have found a trustworthy, local pet service!

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Monday Mashup

I hope all of you beautiful mamas had a wonderful Mother’s Day with your little ones and your families!

Here’s this week’s Monday Mashup of things I’m loving:

1. Kate Spade On Purpose: Kate Spade is teaching a group of 150 women in Masoro, Rwanda to become a profitable supplier for all Kate Spade & Company brands. Their goal is to make these women’s business sustainable in hopes it will transform their entire community of 20,000 people. Just one more reason to love Kate Spade!

2. Laughing Glass Cocktails: Laughing Glass Cocktails is a ready-made margarita made by moms for moms (hello, you have my attention.)  As the brain child of 3 moms, each bottle is hand-crafted with the ladies’ own recipe of super-premium artisan tequila straight from Mexico, all-natural ingredients and a touch of organic agave nectar – sounds tasty! Laughing Glass has taken the guesswork out of making a great cocktail – simply add ice and a salted rim and voila – the perfect margarita and only 100 calories per glass. I’ll cheers to that! Laughing Glass is available throughout California and Colorado including Whole Foods, Cost Plus, World Markets and other specialty grocery and independent liquor stores

3. Evelyn Hensen Art: I came across this lovely artist on Instagram. She creates these awesome prints of different cities around the world and is creating more every day. She also takes requests. How cute would this be for a wedding present or to buy after a trip that you’ll always want to remember? I just love these!

4. Omni Hotels’ #SelfiewithMom Instagram SweepstakesOmni Hotels is offering an Instagram sweepstake for a chance to win a (1) night stay at any Omni worldwide and a $250 gift card to spend at any property. All you have to do is post a photo of you and your mom, or you and your daughter/son and use hashtag #SelfiewithMom and tag @OmniHotels. This sweepstake is open until May 13. Baby Outing: The Dailey Method Barre Studio

As I’ve discussed before on this blog, I’m trying to get back in shape and “tone it up” after having my daughter 4 months ago! It is proving to be a little more difficult than I had imagined, mainly due to the lack of time that I can allocate to working out. That’s why I was extremely excited to hear about the new Baby Class at The Dailey Method Barre Studio  in Carlsbad.

What is The Dailey Method Barre?

Pre-baby, and even pre-pregnancy, I had always been very curious about Barre classes. I learned that the Dailey Method is a unique combination of ballet barre work, core conditioning, muscular strengthening, yoga and orthopedic exercises (yep, yep and yep – I’d like all of this, please!) This form of exercise is safe for all levels of fitness, even pregnant women. And they play really fun music.

Baby Class

The new baby class incorporates your baby into the workouts allowing them to be the added challenge of working through thigh work with the babe as your resistance. During the workout, your baby is in her carrier with you through every motion – or on a mat staring up at you as you complete the exercises.

Let me tell you – this class was HARD. I was sweating bullets and had to take little breaks here and there. And the next several days after the class my legs were like jello jigglers – so sore! I hadn’t completed that intense of a workout since before I was pregnant. I was hooked. Finally, a more intense workout that also incorporated the babies. I’m looking forward to making these classes a part of my weekly schedule. The Dailey Method Barre Studio in Carlsbad also offers childcare right there in the studio if you decide to sign-up for regular classes (sans baby) – so convenient for us busy moms!
